ENGINEERING EXPLAINER

What a coordination review should tell you

A practical guide to the questions, inputs and deliverables behind a protection coordination review.

01

Define the protection objective

A coordination review considers how protective devices interact for the agreed operating conditions. The objective is to understand selectivity and equipment protection, with documented constraints.

02

Look beyond the curve

Time-current plots are part of the evidence. Relay functions, instrument-transformer ratios, fault levels, equipment withstand, transformer inrush and manufacturer information also affect the assessment.

03

Make the findings actionable

Request a clear exceptions register, the basis for proposed changes and the operating scenarios reviewed. Settings changes require appropriate engineering approval and controlled implementation.

This guide is general scoping information. The engineering method and applicable requirements must be established for the specific project.
